Laid out in the 1860s and consisting of a number of terraced houses, warehouses/workshops, a Police Station, Fire Station and Drill Hall into the 1950s, this now, largely lost road was absorbed by the Priory Meadow shopping centre.
In 1863, the local builder John Howell constructed a saw mill in the road; this being the scene of a horrific accident in which one of Howell's employees had a leg amputated by the machinery[1]. A Stone Mason's yard also existed between Middle Street and Havelock Road during 1866[2].
Most of the road was cleared in the late 1970s, leaving a car park and waste ground for two decades until the construction of the aforementioned shopping centre in 1996.
