Physical causes which have exerted an influence on the History of Hastings.
THE line of Coast from the chalk cliffs of Beachy Head, to those of Folkestone, consists of Marsh-lands, except in the immediate neighbourhood of Hastings[1], where the great Wealden Ridge terminates in bold cliffs extending some five or six miles along the sea. A glance at the ordnance map will show that this ridge must, in Caesar's times, and for many succeeding centuries, have been the only pass into the interior; -- it -
