It is also possible that the serious riots both at Rye and Bristol influenced the Hastings Corporation in yielding to popular demands, lest the peace of the borough should in some measure be broken. In any case, on the 5th of December, 1831, at a meeting of the Corporation, it was resolved "That whereas the number of freemen is very limited, and it being expedient to increase the number for the advantage, the peace and the prosperity of the town and port, the following persons being permanent residents, are admitted and sworn as freemen of the said town and port by the unanimous consent of the Mayor and jurats, pursuant to the decree of 1725, by paying their fine of 40s each[a]:-
